An eFax alternative without a monthly plan

eFax is a monthly subscription with a fax number: it lists its Personal plan at $18.99 a month for 200 pages and its Business plan at $39.99 a month. If you only send a fax now and then, FaxJet’s website charges per fax instead: $2.99 for up to 10 pages to the US or Canada, from $3.99 to other countries, with no account, nothing that renews, and a full refund if the fax can’t be delivered.

eFax and FaxJet side by side

They are different kinds of service: eFax is a plan you keep, FaxJet’s website is a fax you buy when you need one. FaxJet also has an iPhone app with plans.

When eFax is the better choice

A plan is worth it when faxing is part of your work: a fax number that stays the same, hundreds of pages a month, several people on one account, or a BAA for health information. eFax is built for that.

When FaxJet is the better choice

Most people fax a few times a year: a form for a bank, a signed contract, a document for an office that only takes faxes. For that, a monthly plan costs more than the faxes themselves.

  • You know the full price before you pay, and nothing renews.
  • No account, so nothing to cancel later.
  • A fax that fails is refunded in full.
  • Up to 30 pages per fax, to over 240 countries.

If you fax every week from your phone, the FaxJet iPhone app has plans with a number of your own.

Before you leave eFax

Download the faxes you want to keep: eFax’s help center says your documents are lost once the account closes. Tell the people who fax you that the number will stop working, and give them an email address instead.

Then send the faxes you still need from FaxJet’s website, one at a time, at a fixed price. The guide to sending a fax from a computer shows each step.

Questions

Is FaxJet cheaper than eFax?

If you send fewer than about six faxes a month, yes: six faxes cost $17.94 on FaxJet’s website, against $18.99 for a month of eFax Personal. If you fax more than that, or need a number of your own, a plan can cost less.

Do I get a fax number?

Not on the website, which only sends. The FaxJet iPhone app includes a fax number of your own with its Pro plan. eFax includes one with every plan.

How do I cancel eFax?

eFax’s help center says a single monthly plan can be cancelled online under Billing, with your fax number and the last four digits of your card; annual plans, several numbers or an open balance go through chat, phone or email, and a subscription bought in the App Store is cancelled with Apple. Save the faxes you want to keep first: they are gone once the account is closed.

Is FaxJet HIPAA compliant?

FaxJet makes no HIPAA claims. eFax advertises HIPAA compliance and offers a BAA on its Business plan, so if your work needs one, a plan like that is the right choice.

Can I receive faxes with FaxJet?

Yes, in the iPhone app, with a fax number of your own on the Pro plan. The website only sends.

What if my fax fails?

FaxJet redials busy or unanswered lines, and if the fax still can’t be delivered, refunds it in full automatically.
