Free fax online: what really costs nothing
You can send a short fax online for free. FaxZero sends up to 3 pages plus a cover page to the US or Canada, 5 times a day, with its own branding on the cover; GotFreeFax sends 3 pages, twice a day. Longer documents, other countries, a delivery receipt and receiving a fax cost money almost everywhere. FaxJet is not free: it sends up to 10 pages to the US or Canada for $2.99, with no ads, and refunds a fax that fails.

How to fax without paying
- 01
Count the pages
Free sending stops at about 3 pages per fax. Some services count the cover page, some add it on top.
- 02
Check the country
Free sending covers the US and Canada. A fax to any other country costs money on every service we checked.
- 03
Confirm by email
Some free services send the fax only after you click a link in an email they send you. Watch your inbox.
- 04
Add your contact details
A free sender has no fax number, so the reply can’t come back by fax. Put your email or phone on the cover page.

The free ways to send a fax, compared
These are the services that send a fax without charging you, with the limits each one publishes on its own site.
| Free limit | Where to | The catch | |
|---|---|---|---|
| FaxZero | 3 pages plus a cover page, 5 faxes a day | US and Canada | Its branding on the cover page; each fax waits for you to confirm it by email |
| GotFreeFax | 3 pages, 2 faxes a day | US and Canada | Anything longer is paid |
| Fax.Plus free plan | 10 pages in total, once | Not stated for the free plan | An account; after the 10 pages, a monthly plan |
| FaxBurner | 5 pages in total; receives 25 pages a month | Not stated | The free fax number lasts 24 hours |
| FaxJet (not free) | $2.99 up to 10 pages, $4.99 up to 30 | US, Canada and 240+ countries (from $3.99) | You pay; no ads, a receipt, a refund if it fails |
Limits as each service published them on October 10, 2026. They change, so check the service’s own page before you rely on it.
When free is enough
If your fax is three pages or less, goes to the US or Canada, and you can wait for a confirmation email, a free service does the job. Use it.
It suits a signed form, a short letter or a one page authorization, sent once, where a branded cover page doesn’t matter.
When free stops working
Free services are built for the shortest faxes. You will pay somewhere when:
- The document is longer than 3 pages, like a lease, medical records or a tax return.
- The fax goes to another country.
- You need proof: a receipt with a confirmation number, the call time and the pages sent.
- There is a deadline and the line might be busy, so you want automatic redials.
- You don’t want an advertisement or another company’s name on the cover page.
- You send more than a couple of faxes in a day.
For those, FaxJet charges one price per fax, fixed before you pay, and refunds it in full if the fax can’t be delivered. The prices page lists every country.
A free trial is a subscription
Many services that say “free fax” mean a free trial. You sign up, often with a card, and the trial turns into a monthly plan unless you cancel in time. Basic plans cost about $7 to $13 a month.
A plan makes sense if you fax every week or need your own fax number. If you fax a few times a year, a trial you forget to cancel costs more than paying for each fax.
Receiving a fax for free
There is no lasting free fax number. Free numbers expire within a day, and trials give you one for a few days before the plan starts.
If someone needs to send you one document, ask whether they can email it instead; most offices can. If you receive faxes regularly, a plan with a number of your own is the honest answer: the FaxJet iPhone app includes one with its Pro plan.
What FaxJet gives you for free
The fax cover sheet maker is free, with no account: type who the fax is for, who it is from and a message, and download a clean PDF without any branding. You can use it with any fax service.
Sending costs money because every fax is a real phone call to a fax machine. In return there are no ads, no account, a live status while it sends, automatic redials, a receipt, and a full refund if it fails. The guide to sending a fax from a computer shows each step.
Libraries and print shops
Some public libraries have a fax machine and charge by the page. Shipping and print stores send faxes at the counter for a few dollars a page, more to other countries. Each location sets its own prices.
That is worth it if you have the paper in hand and no scanner. If you have a PDF or a photo of the pages, sending from your phone or computer is faster and usually costs less.
Questions
Is FaxJet free?
No. Each fax is a real phone call, and the price pays for it: $2.99 up to 10 pages to the US or Canada, from $3.99 to other countries. The fax cover sheet maker is free, and a fax that fails costs nothing.
Is there a truly free way to send a fax online?
Yes, for short faxes inside North America. FaxZero and GotFreeFax send up to 3 pages to the US or Canada for free, with a daily limit. Beyond that you pay.
Can I send a free international fax?
Not that we could find. FaxZero, for example, charges $3.63 for up to 15 pages to most countries. FaxJet starts at $3.99, depending on the country and the page count.
Can I fax for free from Gmail?
Gmail has no fax feature of its own. Email to fax services and add ons do the sending, and they are paid plans or trials.
Can I receive a fax for free?
Not for long. Free numbers expire within a day, and trials last a few days before a monthly plan starts. If you only need one document, ask the sender to email it.
Is a free fax safe for private documents?
Read the service’s privacy policy first. FaxZero says it deletes fax content within three days but keeps the sender’s email and the destination number. Free services also show their own branding or ads on the cover page.
What does a free trial fax service cost afterwards?
Trials turn into monthly plans unless you cancel. Basic plans cost about $7 to $13 a month (Fax.Plus, MyFax, iFax, October 2026). If you fax once or twice a year, paying per fax costs less.
Can I fax for free at the library?
Some libraries have a fax machine and charge by the page; shipping and print stores charge more, often a few dollars a page. Prices are set by each location, so call first.
